As per previous announcements earlier this year, the visual editor (????????????????????) will be enabled at this Wikipedia in some days. It allows people to edit articles as if they were using a typical word processor. Here's a quick explanation of what is going to happen: you can find a more detailed one, with pictures, at mediawiki.org.

What's changing?

In the new system, you get a single edit tab which follows your preferences, and that therefore will launch the wikitext editor or the visual editor depending on which one you opened the last (????????????????????????????????????????).
This applies to everyone who edited recently, including anonymous users.

How do I switch to the other editor then?

Buttons on the toolbars of both editors were added months ago so that you can switch from one to the other every time you want to, without losing your changes and without having to save first.
The button, located on the right side of the toolbar, looks like square brackets ([[ ]]) in the visual editor, and like a pencil () in the wikitext editor.

Are there other options available?

Yes. You can choose whether you want:

• ???????????????????????????????????????????? (if you temporarily switch to the wikitext editor through the button on the toolbar, the system won't remember it; also, it only applies to namespaces where the visual editor is available).
• ??????????????????????????? (if you temporarily switch to the visual editor through the button on the toolbar, the system won't remember it)
• ???????????????????????????? (a system in place at multiple wikis since 2013. You are familiar with this option if you have been using the visual editor here.)
  • Please note: all the users will always have the opportunity to switch to the other editor via buttons on the toolbars, for occasional edits.

How do I set my preference?

• If you want to try or to stay in the new system: you don't need to do anything.
• If you had explicitly disabled the visual editor in the past and want to keep it disabled: you don't need to do anything.
• All the registered users have a dropdown menu in the Editing tab of their Preferences (???????? --> ???????????), where they can choose from. This only needs to be done once. Don't forget to save ;)
  • Users with the visual editor disabled need to re-enable it if they're interested in accessing that menu!
• People who use the visual editor regularly will see a pop-up (only once after the single edit tab system is introduced), and they can choose their favorite setting there. Of course, they can change their mind at any time just like the others, and pick a different setting from their Preferences.
  • Anonymous users who have used the visual editor recently will also be able to choose which editor they want to edit with.
  • Reminder: all the users will always have the opportunity to switch to the other editor via buttons on the toolbars, for occasional edits.

Final remarks

• Please spread the word about this major change in any way that you deem appropriate for this community, by linking to this announcement elsewhere, putting up a site notice, etc. Please note it will affect all the registered users at first, and after some days it will reach logged-out contributors as well if no major technical issues have arisen. Don't hesitate to ask questions, I'll be around for a while to help!

Scholarship applications for ESEAP Conference 2018 is now open!

ESEAP Conference 2018 is a regional conference for Wikimedia communities around the ESEAP regions. ESEAP stands for East, Southeast Asia, and Pacific. Taking place in Bali, Indonesia on 5-6 May 2018, this is the first regional conference for the Wikimedia communities around the regions.

Full scholarships are subject to quotas, maximum two people per country and your country is eligible to apply, visit this page.

We also accept submissions of several formats, including:

• Workshop & Tutorial: these are presentations with a focus on practical work directed either to acquiring a specific skill or doing a specific task. Sessions are 55 minutes led by the presenters in a classroom space suitable for laptops and work.
• Posters: A2-size format to give news, share your community event/program, set out an idea, propose a concept, or explain a problem. The poster itself must be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons with a suitable license.
• Short Presentation/Sharing talks: 10-15 minutes presentation on certain topic.

Deadline for submissions and scholarship applications is on 15 March 2018.

Help Improving Search for Khmer

Hello! Sorry for writing in English. Please help translate to your language.

I'm trying to improve search on Khmer wikis by automatically re-ordering the characters in Khmer text so that words that look the same will be matches when searching. For example, ????????????? and ?????????????. The first one has (? + ?? + ??) and the second has (? + ?? + ??). The first one gets 152 results on Khmer Wikipedia and the second gets 67 results. I'd like them both to get all the results.

I need help reviewing the syllables I've re-ordered to make sure they are correct. I also have found some syllables that I don't understand, and I would appreciate any help to explain them. The examples, with context, are on Mediawiki. Comments here or on the discussion page there would be very helpful.

Improving the translation support for the Khmer Wikipedia

Sorry about not being able to write in Khmer.

Content translation has been successful in supporting the translation process on many Wikipedia communities, and we want to help additional wikis with potential to grow using translation as part of a new initiative.

Content translation facilitates the creation of Wikipedia articles by translating content from other languages. It has been used already to create more than half a million articles. In addition, the tool provides mechanisms to encourage the creation of good quality content, preventing the publication of lightly edited machine translations. In general, our analysis shows that the translations produced are less likely to be deleted than the articles started from scratch.

Khmer Wikipedia editors have used Content translation to create more than a hundred articles. Given the size of the editing community, we think that there is potential to use translation to create more articles, expand existing ones, and attract new editors that learn how to make productive edits. Translation can help the community to reduce the language gap with other languages and grow the number of editors in a sustainable way. In order to achieve this goal, we want to collaborate with you to make Content translation more visible in the Khmer Wikipedia and support new ways to translate.

As a first step, during the next weeks we plan to enable Content translation by default on the Khmer Wikipedia. That will make it easy for users to discover the tool through several entry points. However, users not interested in translation will still be able to disable it from their preferences.

Proposal: Set two-letter project shortcuts as alias to project namespace globally

Hello everyone,

I apologize for posting in English. I would like to inform everyone that I created a new global request for comment (GRFC) at Meta Wiki, which may affect your project: m:Requests for comment/Set short project namespace aliases by default globally.

In this GRFC, I propose that two-project shortcuts for project names will become a default alias for the project namespace. For instance, on all Wikipedias, WP will be an alias to the Wikipedia: namespace (and similar for other projects). Full list is available in the GRFC.

This is already the case for Wikivoyages, and many individual projects asked for this alias to be implemented. I believe this makes it easier to access the materials in the project namespace, as well as creating shortcuts like WP:NPOV, as well as helps new projects to use this feature, without having to figure out how to request site configuration changes first.

As far as I can see, ???????? currently does not have such an alias set. This means that such an alias will be set for you, if the GRFC is accepted by the global community.

I would like to ask all community members to participate in the request for comment at Meta-Wiki, see m:Requests for comment/Set short project namespace aliases by default globally.

Files with no license

Hi! Some users have uploaded one or more files with no license. All files on Wikipedia need a license. If no license is added the file have to be deleted.

So all users should check the files they have uploaded and check if all information is correct and if there is a license.

I am currently adding the files in ?????????????????:Files with no license. There is a link in the top of the category you can click to see which file(s) you uploaded without a license (if any). It will take a few hours to add all files (about 850 in total) so if you check now there may be more later.

I plan to leave a message on the talk pages of the users that have uploaded files without a license once all files are added to the category.

Crosswiki vandalism

Hi! Sorry for writing in English and maybe in the wrong place. I have been keeping an eye on a vandal, Angelmunoz50, also known as DaisyBus2017 on Meta and LiliaMiller2002 on Wikidata. ??????? Riley Ann Sawyers is typical of the articles that this vandal creates, that is they are partly correct (but machine translated) but with important facts wrong or unsourced. Mostly it is dates and cause of death but sometimes the wrong information is about nationality, burial place, height or other data. Weird edits on Wikidata

Excuse me for using English. ?????:???????????/Ganga999devi made several wrong edits linked different things on Wikidata lately. I checked some of their edits on Khmer Wikipedia and most of them seems fine. Some of their other contributions are about deities which I do not know much about, and therefore cannot make any comments. Besides that, they also made some questionable redirects in Khmer Wikipedia (which you should not be concerned about because they are not related to Wikidata).

I am not familiar with Wikidata, but the topics they edited in Khmer appears to be consistent with that in English. --Trezoo (???????????) ??????:?? ??????????? ???? ???????? ????????? (UTC)

??????????????:Trezoo, let's see a case. this article was about a hindu goddess, brahma's first daughter. After his edit, this article is renamed and is about a Chinese water goddess, which is totally different from the original one. Moreover, these two goddess had two independent pages on Wikidata because they are not the same. He merged them and caused lots of messes. I have no idea why he didn't create new articles and add new articles to existed Wikidata items. It will take lots of time to clean and cut pages histories by admins.--迴廊彼端 (???????????) ??????:?? ??????????? ???? ???????? ????????? (UTC)

It seems like they made lots of wrong merges on Wikidata and also lots of wrong redirects on Khmer Wikipedia. I think most of their edits about deities should be reverted, but that will take serious amount of time and effort. I also suspects they are not a native Khmer user because their wordings are unusual and their account is originally created on Thai Wikipedia. Did they make any wrong edits there as well? Enabling Section Translation: a new mobile translation experience

The WMF Language team is pleased to let you know that we will like to enable the Section translation tool in Khmer Wikipedia. For this, our team will love you to read about the tool and test it so you can:

• Give us your feedback
• Ask us questions
• Tell us how to improve it.

Below is background information about Section translation, why we have chosen your community, and how to test it.

Background information

Content Translation has been a successful tool for editors to create content in their language. More than one million articles have been created across all languages since the tool was released in 2015. The Wikimedia Foundation Language team has improved the translation experience further with the Section Translation. The WMF Language team enabled the early version of the tool in February 2021 in Bengali Wikipedia. Through their feedback, the tool was improved and ready for your community to test and help us with feedback to make it better.

Section Translation extends the capabilities of Content Translation to support mobile devices. On mobile, the tool will:

• Guide you to translate one section at a time in order to expand existing articles or create new ones.
• Make it easy to transfer knowledge across languages anytime from your mobile device.

Khmer Wikipedia seems an ideal candidate to enjoy this new tool since it has Content Translation tool enabled by default.

We plan to enable the tool on Khmer Wikipedia in the coming weeks if there are no objections from your community. After it is enabled, we’ll monitor the content created with the tool and process all the feedback. In any case, feel free to raise any concerns or questions you may already have in any of the following formats:

Before the enablement, you can try the current implementation of the tool in our testing instance. Section Translation tool enabled in Khmer Wikipedia

The Language team is pleased to let you know that the Section Translation tool is now enabled in Khmer Wikipedia. It means you can translate real content one section at a time using your mobile devices with ease.
Now you can also start translating an article on your mobile device right when you notice it is missing in Khmer. From a Wikipedia article in any language, switch languages and search for ?????????. If the article does not exist, an option to translate it will appear, as shown in the image below.

Content created with the tool will be marked with the “sectiontranslation” tag for the community to review. We’ll monitor the content created, but we are very interested in hearing about your experience using the tool and reviewing the content created with it.

IMPORTANT: Admin activity review

Hello. A policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, interface administrator, etc.) was adopted by global community consensus in 2013. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing administrators' activity on all Wikimedia Foundation wikis with no inactivity policy. To the best of our knowledge, your wiki does not have a formal process for removing "advanced rights" from inactive accounts. This means that the stewards will take care of this according to the admin activity review.

We have determined that the following users meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no logged actions for more than 2 years):

These users will receive a notification soon, asking them to start a community discussion if they want to retain some or all of their rights. If the users do not respond, then their advanced rights will be removed by the stewards.

Proposal to enable the "Contribute" entry point in Khmer Wikipedia

Hello Khmer Wikipedians,

The WMF Language and Product Localization team proposes enabling an entry point called "Contribute" to your Wikipedia.

The Contribute entry point is based on collaborative work with other product teams in the Wikimedia Foundation on Edit discovery, which validated the entry point as a persistent and constant path that contributors took to discover ways to contribute content in Wikipedia.

Therefore, enabling this entry point in your Wikipedia will help contributors quickly discover available tools and immediately click to start using them. This entry point is designed to be a central point for discovering contribution tools in Khmer Wikipedia.

Who can access it

Once it is enabled in your Wikipedia, newcomers can access the entry point automatically by just logging into their account, click on the User drop-down menu and choose the "Contribute" icon, which takes you to another menu where you will find a self-guided description of what you can do to contribute content, as shown in the image below. An option to "view contributions" is also available to access the list of your contributions.

For experienced contributors, the Contribute icon is not automatically shown in their User drop-down menu. They will still see the "Contributions" option unless they change it to the "Contribute" manually.

This feature is available in four Wikipedia (Albanian, Malayalam, Mongolian, and Tagalog). We have gotten valuable feedback that helped us improve its discoverability. Now, it is ready to be enabled in other Wikis. One major improvement was to make the entry point optional for experienced contributors who still want to have the "Contributions" entry point as default.          

We plan to enable it on mobile for Wikis, where the Section translation tool is enabled. In this way, we will provide a main entry point to the mobile translation dashboard, and the exposure can still be limited by targeting only the mobile platform for now. If there are no objections to having the entry point for mobile users from your community, we will enable it by 10th December 2024.

We welcome your feedback and questions in this thread on our proposal to enable it here. Suppose there are no objections, we will deploy the "Contribute" entry point in your Wikipedia.

Enabling Dark mode for logged-out users in this Wikipedia

The Wikimedia Foundation Web team will be enabling dark mode here on your Wikipedia by February 2025 now that pages on your wiki have passed our checks for accessibility and other quality checks. Congratulations!

The plan to enable is made possible by the diligent work of editors and other technical contributors in your community who ensured that templates, gadgets, and other parts of pages can be accessible in dark mode. Thank you all for making dark mode available for everybody!

For context, the Web team has concluded work on dark mode. If, on some wikis, the option is not yet available for logged-out users, this is likely because many pages do not yet display well in dark mode. As communities make progress on this work, we enable this feature on additional wikis once per month.

If you notice any issues after enabling dark mode, please create a page: Reading/Web/Accessibility for reading/Reporting/xx.wikipedia.org in MediaWiki (like these pages), and report the issue in the created page.

IMPORTANT: Admin activity review

Hello. A policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, interface administrator, etc.) was adopted by global community consensus in 2013. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing administrators' activity on all Wikimedia Foundation wikis with no inactivity policy. To the best of our knowledge, your wiki does not have a formal process for removing "advanced rights" from inactive accounts. This means that the stewards will take care of this according to the admin activity review.

We have determined that the following users meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no logged actions for more than 2 years):

1. User:????????? (bureaucrat, administrator)
2. User:?????????? (bureaucrat, administrator)

These users will receive a notification soon, asking them to start a community discussion if they want to retain some or all of their rights. If the users do not respond, then their advanced rights will be removed by the stewards.

However, if you as a community would like to create your own activity review process superseding the global one, want to make another decision about these inactive rights holders, or already have a policy that we missed, then please notify the stewards on Meta-Wiki so that we know not to proceed with the rights review on your wiki. Help needed with translating User Interface message strings

I hope this message finds you well! We have some User Interface message strings that need your help to be translated into Khmer. Right now, they're at 0 percent, and it would be fantastic to get them fully localized.

Once you’ve got your account set up, you’ll need to translate a few random messages for the site to authenticate your knowledge of the language. After that, you can dive right into the translations using the links above.

At one time I came across sources from 2005-2007 that the degraded remnants of the Khmer Rouge continue to hide in the jungle, engaging in robbery and smuggling. I have not found more recent sources.
